Winter Walk: Gold Veils II

As an artist, I've learned the beauty in the small--seeing details that often go unnoticed, relishing in the emotional impact of what might seem mundane to others.

This happened for me recently during a snowshoe hike on a beautiful winter day at the Bellamy River Wildlife Sanctuary. There was much to be captivated by. The particular twist of a tree branch. The sprinkle of brambles peeking through a drift. The way light reflected on a frozen pond, ever so subtle, but still there.

Most of all, though, it was the beech trees. Their leaves clung in gold veils that shimmered ever so slightly when the breeze hit. They brought such delight, and I could not stop staring. They invoked a deep stirring, too. Emotions and memory converged and would not be satisfied until I let them have their say.

I knew I had to paint what they stirred in me, and lyrical abstraction was the best way to convey it. A new series--WINTER WALK: GOLD VEILS--was born. This is the second piece in the series.
